Elwick Joaquin grabs the William Hill Hotbox Bet Stakes at Newcastle on 3rd January as his first victory of the season
The Grade A1 William Hill Hotbox Bet Stakes was won by M Walsh trained, Elwick Joaquin, at Newcastle on 3rd January. It was raced over a distance of 480 metres and offered the prize money of £118.
The son of Droopys Vieri out of Droopys Jackie born in October 2007, Elwick Joaquin broke from the fourth stall and led through the track till the wire, clocking the distance in 28.90 seconds. He led the runner up of the race, Hestias Lad by a good
4 ¼ lengths.
Breaking from the second stall, Hestias Lad, trained by S Ray, raced through the track clearly and ran on for the wire, taking 29.24 seconds. Securing the third position in the race was J Wright trained, Droopys Mahers, who ran out wide and found himself
in plenty of space to cover the distance in 29.40 seconds.
Racing right behind his kennel mate was, Droopys William, in pursuit of the fourth position. He geared up gradually but was obstructed during the course that upset his momentum. It took him 29.62 seconds to get done with the race.
M Walsh’s other entry in the race was the 6 to 4 favourite, Outback Gideon, who ran clear after leaving the first stall and made it through the wire in 29.76 seconds. The last hound to finish the race was Droopys Alastair, who is trained by J Fenwick.
He managed racing through the distance in 29.92 seconds.
This was Elwick Joaquin’s first victory of the season. He last won on 10th
December, 2011, at Newcastle in the Williamhill.com Stakes. He was entered as the 7 to 4 favourite, and covered the 480 metres track in 29.27 seconds. The next two races were defeats and the last race of 2011 saw him finish sixth.
He has a record of participating in Grade A1 and other open races throughout his career. He has raced at Newcastle, Belle Vue, Sunderland and Sheffield. He has been entered as a favourite numerous times. The last hat-trick that he achieved was in 2010,
when he amassed four victories on the trot at Newcastle.
Elwick Joaquin has started off the season performing brilliantly and in case he manages keeping up with the pace, he will again be able to strike a hat trick soon.
