Do professors mind if I email them w/ nonbusiness things. At a cc college? Not random things, but stuff on catching up on the day and making some nice comments? Or is this bad?

  1. I agree with ijc.  As a community college instructor, I don't mind hearing from my students by email or by phone but I would feel uncomfortable about hearing from a student who just wanted to catch up on the day.  Nowadays, we have to be so careful about   so many things.  And, yes, we are busy as well.  There, however, is nothing wrong with contacting your instructor about something pertinent to the class and making your "nice comments" at that time.  By "nice comments", I hope you mean things like how much you enjoy the class, the lectures, whatever.  Nothing more personal than that.

  2. that is what they are there for, to provide you with help, and also why they have office hours.

  3. I recommend emailing professors with only academic issues, that pertain to the course you are taking with them.  I guess this is to say only business things.

Most professors have limited time and if 25% of their students sent them random emails it would take up a lot of their time.
