Question:

Emancipated in Ohio?

I am considering getting emancipated. I'm 17 years old and I live with my mom, i guess. She's never home and I'm usually with my boyfriend of 9 months. I graduate high school in 4 months cause I'm doing a midyear program and I start college classes in the winter trimester. I have a straight head on my shoulders and I know what I want out of life. The reason I want to get emancipated is; my mom and I never get along and our relationship is just a huge amount of stress on my shoulders. There's a catch: whenever me and my mom argue, she immediately calls my dad and tells him how bad of a kid I am. My dad's a Sargent for the county and I'm afraid if I follow through with the paper work he would 'pull some strings' so I would loose my case. Whenever me and her fight it's because of her boyfriend. About a month ago he got in my face and called me a little ***** because we were outside and he thought I was giving him a dirty look, but I was squinting since my contacts make my eyes extremely sensitive to sunlight. She still brings him around and when she does I get stuck in my room because I don't want to be around him. What I would have to do to get emancipated and how long it would take? Oh yeah, I live in Ohio. (I'm not sure if there are certain laws for each state.)

  1. Keep in mind that once you become emancipated neither one of your parents will be financially responsible for you.  In other words they won't have to pay for your college education.  Once you get emancipated you're on your own...

  2. You write:  I graduate high school in 4 months cause I'm doing a midyear program and I start college classes in the winter trimester.

So go away to college.  You can live at the dorm.

You can hang in there for four months.  I don't know what it would cost you to get emancipated, but I am sure you would have to pay an attorney, right?  Forget it.  Hang in there for 4 months, then move to a college dorm.

If you have to come home on holidays, stay at dad's house.  Avoid mom's boyfriend.

You've only got four months.  So stay at dad's as much as possible.

If emancipated, doesn't one have to support herself financially?  So if you are unable to support yourself, don't do the emancipation thing.  Just go to a college away from home, where you can stay in the dorms.  If mom and dad will financially support you through college, then allow them to do so.

Edit:  As a mother, I would be upset if my 17-year-old daughter wanted to move in with her boyfriend.

If the situation at home is truly upsetting, you can find a college with a dorm.

If you are using this as an excuse to move in with boyfriend?  Then my advice is no.  Don't do it.

If you can afford your own apartment, utilities, tuition, food, etc without boyfriend's assistance?  Then go for it.
