Question:

Emancipated?

My friend recently got emancipated. He didn't get along with his parents. Is it possible for him to continue high school if he has moved out of the house and now doesn't have a parent to register him? He is 16 and is desperate to finish school.

  1. Part of emancipation means you don't need a guarding to sign things for you. Since this is in the homeschooling section, I don't know if he's planning on online schooling (hence, the registration) or homeschooling. He would not be able to provide his own diploma, so if he wants a diploma, he would have to sign up with some sort of program. As long as he has proof of emancipation, there shouldn't be a problem.

If he's going to school, then he still shouldn't need a guardian to enroll him.

  2. Yes.  He is emancipated.  He is considered, by the court, to be able to make his own decisions.

    He is responsible for himself.

Even if he was not emancipated, he could still register himself in a public school.   That is our policy at the school where I work.  He would also be responsible for school fees.

  3. yeah, it just means that he is supposed to be able to support himself without his parents. He would need to show his legal status, but it won't be a big deal. There are many options if he is homeschooling, or going to a site based school. Depends on what state he is in too.
