Emanuel Steward: Andy Lee is like a son to me – Boxing News
After being blown away by Julio Cesar Chavez Jr., Andy Lee and his trainer are concerned as to whether Chavez for juiced up for the match or not. Emanuel Steward, Lee’s trainer, expressed his concerns regarding Chavez’s condition and has requested d**k Cole,
Texas State Athletic Commissioner, to provide clarity over the matter. Steward wants to know if Chavez passed an anti-doping drug test on Saturday evening. In addition, Steward will be meeting Senator John McCain to talk about enhanced drug testing for the
sport. It should be noted here that John McCain is the instigator of the Muhammad Ali Boxing Reform Act on July 10.
When asked regarding his agenda, Steward said, “Andy Lee is like a son to me. I always look after all my fighters’ health and well being. I am very concerned about enhanced performance drugs being used by boxers. This is not tennis or golf; boxing is a physical
combat sport where if drugs are used by one fighter then this is a disadvantage against the other fighter and causes serious damage to a fighter’s health."
He added that he is not going to wait for someone to be killed in the ring and that he is taking the matter on Saturday evening seriously. He further said that he is waiting on the Texas Commission to present a clarification of the situation before he considers
any other appropriate measures.
He added that he is not ready to put Lee or any other fighter of his at risk. According to Steward, by fighting pugilists who are not dope-free, his fighters’ are risking their lives and health, which is definitely not worthwhile. Steward has requested all
‘good people’ in boxing to stand up and speak against such acts. According to him, such fighters will be stopped and commissions and promoters should realize this.
The two issues that, according to Steward, put Chavez in doubt is his excessive weight gain from 160lbs to 180lbs from the weigh-in to the fight night and the second is his leg cramps after the fight.
For now, Steward wants an investigation into the matter to decide whether Chavez was on drugs or not.
