Emanuel Steward believes Cotto is in jeopardy against Mayweather – Boxing News
Former trainer for Miguel Cotto, the current WBA junior middleweight, believes Cotto’s title is in jeopardy against Mayweather. According to him, Cotto should conform to a powerful strategy if he wants to beat Mayweather. However, considering Mayweather’s
undefeated streak, he feels that Cotto has a rare chance to win.
In his recent interview, Steward said, “Well, he’s [Cotto] gotta fight a very specific style of fighting and really to operate behind a good solid jab and to keep his balance. Whether he fights with his head down, feet too far apart, Floyd will systematically
break him down.”
Miguel Cotto currently stands with 37 wins, 2 losses and 30 knockouts in his portfolio, whereas Floyd Mayweather Jr. has bagged 42 wins, 0 loss and 26 knockouts. Both the fighters are scheduled to meet in the ring on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas,
Nevada.
Cotto’s last fight was against Antonio Margarito which he won. Cotto was unable to dominate Margarito throughout the fight, however it was Margarito’s injured eye bone that gave Cotto an advantage. After his eye bone shattered once again, Margarito’s corner
called off the fight. In the post bout conference, Margarito said that he could have stayed in the fight for longer if his medic and corner would not have ended the show. In other words, by the end of the fight, Cotto’s opponent was not tired or injured, only
his eye bone laid him to rest. Keeping this in mind, most analysts are of the view that Cotto will not be able to defend his title against Mayweather, since Mayweather is in his best form and unlike Margarito, he does not bear any major injuries.
In his previous interview, Miguel Cotto has shown signs of fear. While Mayweather has respectfully abashed Cotto, the latter has always defended himself without making any winning claims. In their promotional tour for the fight, Mayweather said he respects
Cotto a lot but he knows he is better than him. On the other hand, Cotto said that he will defend his country’s pride and will do his best to beat Mayweather. Cotto’s statements are a testimonial to the fact that he is not confident of winning against Mayweather.
