Emanuel and Alison put a great show at National Banco do Brasil
The SWATCH FIVB World Tour made its ninth-stop in Brazil last week for the wonderful National Banco do Brasil, the event which greeted the beach volleyball duos from around the country and put their abilities to a test. The ‘final four’ matches of National
Banco do Brasil were held on last Sunday, 10th October, 2010 at the Pajucara Beach in Maceio, Alagoas, Brazil.
In men’s division, Olympic champion Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti got their hands on the gold-ware by displaying incredible performance. They defeated Ricardo Santos and Marcio Araujo. The victorious duo earned their third title of the season. In the past,
Emanuel Rego was paired with Ricardo Santos and they made great achievement together. Somehow the partnership came to an end in 2009 and both of them opted for new partners. Emanuel was joined by Alison Cerutti, while Ricardo Santos also formed new partnership
with Marcio Araujo.
By hook or by crook, the National Banco do Brasil brought the two players face-to-face in the gold-medal match. It was their second meeting after with new partners. They contested their attack capabilities and defence techniques in front of passionate fans.
The pair of Emanuel/Alison proved to the better side and thrashed 2-0 (18-12, 18-13) victory over the opposite side.
Emanuel/Alison opened the first set with an average pace. They remained focused on defence and formed good chemistry. Marcio/Ricardo produced powerful shots but Emanuel blocked them on the net with flat hands. Alison provided full support to his partner
to penetrate the heavy spikes. Emanuel/Alison gradually settled down in their position and started the attack. They made stabilized moves on slippery sand and hit the ball with full might.
The forearm shots coupled with tricky passes devastated Marcio/Ricardo. They struggled to stop the score but Emanuel and Alison were not in a mood to give up the strike. They produced stronger shots and stormed the rivals’ court with deadly spikes. The pair
of Emanuel and Alison picked up lead and further widened the gap. The challenger side couldn’t break their rhythm and Emanuel/Alison hit the finish line. They dismissed Mario/Ricardo with a score of 18-12 in first set.
The second spell also started on the right foot for Emanuel and Alison. They scored convincing shots and earned better status in the game. After losing the first set, Marcio and Ricardo put more effort to control ball-handling errors. They produced good
shots but charged-up Emanuel/Alison remained one step ahead in the game. They kept on moving with same energy and momentum. The powerful serves of Alison played vital role in raising their score.
They made quick jumps and finished the set with a score of 18-13 in second set. Emanuel Rego and Alison Cerutti achieved the landmark and declared match victory in the final showdown of National Banco do Brasil.
"I am very pleased with our performance as, besides the difficulty of facing a team that was playing their third straight final, we had trouble with the hot weather but were able to handle it very well," Emanuel said. "We showed maturity and that is very
important."
In the points’ race, Thiago Barbosa and Pedro Cunha lead the charts with 2,920 points. The second spot is firmly captured by Benjamin Insfran and Bruno Schmidt with 2,600 points. The successful duo of National Banco do Brasil comes in the third place with
2,540 points.
Georgian Olympian Renato Gomes and Jorge Terceiro settled for third-position. Likewise, the women’s section was dominated by the top-seeded Juliana Felisberta Silva and Larissa Franca who settled for the top-spot.
The next championship is scheduled to be hosted in Salvador from October 21-24, which will provide another chance to the unsuccessful teams to prove their endeavour.
