Question:

Embarrassed about my "Posh" accent?

My accent is fairly "Posh" according to most people and I myself have noticed it. When I meet new people, I usually get the impression that they think I'm stuck up because of my accent; causing me to lose some confidence in conversation. I'm British, but have never been brought up in England and most of my friends believe I'm a fan of the Queen. :S

Anyway, it's hard for me to speak on Xbox Live and other "speech" programs because of some of the comments I often hear on it. If anyone can help me get past it, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance! :)

  1. I just want to say I love a british accent. I don't think you should be ashamed or embarrassed. Maybe when someone first meets you they don't think your stuck up, they are just fascinated by your awesome posh accent.  I always watch the british tv station, cause I love it!!!  I am a huge Ab Fab fan. You should be rockin the accent...

but thats just me..... I dig it.

  2. ok, when I was younger I had a heavy Irish accent (I think from spending so much time with my grandparents) Certain words I pronounced very differently, like instead of "wash" I would say "warsh".   When I started school a lot of kids made fun of me for it (the b******s!) and as a result I trained myself to talk "normal".  Now years and years later I wish I hadn't done that because in a way I feel like lost part of my heritage!  Be yourself...and if anyone makes fun of you for it tell them to sod off!  It would be a pretty boring world if we were all the same.

  3. Flaunt your accent, it's unique and a lot of guys think it's quite s**y.

  4. I think a british accents are s**y! lol you shouldn't feel less confident because of the way you talk, or your accent be proud of it!

  5. Haha!! I have the same problem, I'm from South Yorkshire and everyone says I sound too "posh" for yorkshire. However, I was born here and have never left!! I always wanted to be an actress and was told I could never be on Emmerdale as my accent isn't Yorkshire enough!!

My Grandad speaks quite broad Yorkshire (He says "watter", where I pronounce is "worter") but my mum doesn't and I think it's nice to be a little bit different.

  6. What exactly is a british accent?

  7. Flaunt ittttttt.

I am British and don't really have a strong accent as I am from Cheshire, so people say that up here we are 'posh'.

But it doesn't bother me cos, in the end, if a company want someone who speaks English, I can do it like the Queen ;) (sort of)

  8. dont worry about it..be who you are.. dont change cuz some ppl dont like it.  dont act stuck up.. your accent makes u .. well .. u .. and those who really care about you will overlook it

  9. don't change it.

    so what if you're not

    a 'neutral' speaker?

    'neutral' is boring.

    it's who you are. don't

    try and change it just

    because they say so.

  10. Eh...don't listen to them, and never be embarrassed about anything about you that makes you, YOU!

Your accent just helps define who you are....it's part of what makes you a completely unique person.

Of course, if you're just looking to file the rough edge off the acent - if you really feel it's necessary - try a speech class.

  11. F*** them, what about their accents? i used to get bullied about my accent when i moved from england to ireland, but now i couldn't give a c**p. you can't help the way you speak.

  12. Don't let it bother you,i bet most people are jealous of your accent. i sound posh but i don't get out of the bath to have a p**s.(lol)Keep smiling

  13. don't worry, I'm also from Britain and have a sort of posh accent

you know your friends probably tease you because when they are talking to you they feel insecure about sounding common

seriously chill, it's not that bad

    :D

    hope this helps
