Embarrassed to do laps at public pool because I don't swim?

Question

I haven't swam in a long time and don't know how I'll do in water (beginner classes as a kid and that's it) should i go to a public swimming pool and go in a lane? will there be other people sharing a lane? i don't wanna be the lame leg in the pool and get in other people's way and make a fool out of myself
