  1. The brand of your embroidery unit may "dictate" which software to use. Most embroidery or embroidery/combo/sewing units guide the owner towards a specific brand of machine embroidery software. If this is not the case, I would first go back to my dealer for his suggestions, as he has probably tested several brands before promoting any in particular. This is where dealer support/classes is so very important. Service AFTER the sale is priority here. There are a lot of good brands of embroidery software on the market...also, if you are a "beginner" in machine embroidery, I believe your primary considerations should be 1) user-friendly features, 2) Tech support for the customer should be A-1; 3) Cost.  Notice I didn't state cost as #1. Sometimes the user-friendly features override what you might have to pay..as the features in the long run will pay for themselves if it is easy to use. If the program is easy to use, you will WANT to go back to it as often as is possible. The digitizing and embroidering journey should be first off, fun. Second, it should make you WANT to learn more. Third, it should allow you to add to your learning pleasure as you LEARN how to use it all.

  2. If you mean hand embroidery, not machine embroidery, I love PCStitch.  It's really easy to use and does everything I need it to do.  You can download a demo version at the link below.

If it's for machine embroidery, it depends on the make of embroidery machine you have.

  3. As you have been told, your machine can and will often choose what software you get.  I am partial to the Brother's Embroidery Programs.  You can do a simple design of your own very quickly, (after your first tries).  I was intimidated by the lack of a manual but I waded in, almost drowned in some areas but have found myself looking at things and going "Hum how can I make that into an embroidery?"  the nice things about the Brother's software is that most designs have a .pes file available first and then followed by others but the down side of the software is the $$$.  My husband just spoilt me with mine and since I am caretaker for him and my mother, I haven't had a lot of time to study and practice and that's where sample / test sewing comes in.  Always sew your pattern out first, the choice of material and stablizer's is important.  I have found my local sewing center a lot of help.  Good Sewing and Enjoy.

  4. Try Embird you can have a 30 day trial from www.secretsof embroidery.com they also have great tutorials by Caroloyn. You can buy separate units depending what you want to do. I have 3D and Embird

  5. If you are talking about Machine Embroidery the best could cost you a small fortune! But if you want one that can give you what you need at a good price, I suggest Embroidery Magic 2

you accompany that with Buzztools or Dakota Sizer and there really isn't anything you can't do
