Emerald Beech posts her first graded stakes win in the Grade 3 Glen Falls at Saratoga
The 5-year-old mare, Emerald Beech’s, magnificent run continues as she landed her fourth consecutive victory and first time ever graded stakes' win in the $102,000 Grade 3 Glen Falls on the final day of the Saratoga meet on 5 September, 2011.
Jonathan Sheppard trained Emerald Beech engaged herself with the long shot pacesetter, Dynaslew, going in the mid stretch, but her amazing turn of foot left Dynaslew behind and falling 2 ½ lengths short behind Emerald Beech.
It was a sweeping moving coming around the final turn, as she overhauled the runaway pacesetter up around the eighth pole and from then on in, the experienced mare sailed past under a hand ride form jockey Alex Solis to her first ever graded stakes win.
Under showery conditions, nine three-year-old or up fillies and mares contested on a soft course, while Emerald Beech slipped on to sixth position after three furlongs.
She was reserved well back going around through the first two turns of the 1 3/8 mile event. Dynaslew under jockey Kent Desormeaux led the field with a soft opening mile in 1 minute and 43.18 seconds.
It was then time for Kent to urge his ride through the final turn, and the front runner had clear advantage turning for home.
However, Emerald Beech advanced into contention for jockey Alex Solis also in the stretch and rapidly accelerated from way behind in sixth position and got on even terms with Dynaslew after an amazing turn of foot from the mare.
Now all was left to dispatch the foe and be home free, and that is what exactly the experienced mare did under brisk urging to win comfortably, with the final time of 2 minutes and 21.71 seconds to complete the 1 3/8 mile test over the inner turf.
Alex Solis won for the third time in a row riding Emerald Beech, who saw off tough competition to win the race for trainer Jonathan Sheppard.
Dynaslew went on to finish second, 7 ½ lengths in front of the third place finisher Senada, who was under veteran jockey Ramon Dominguez.
