Emerald Downs 2011 – Cahill’s Ride and Wiley Watch accident, Tony Schiro injured
Horse racing is subject to many trivial accidents, one such accident took place in Emerald Downs. On the afternoon two three-year old fillies broke loose and ran all the way to the stable area some 200 yards away injuring the thoroughbred owner and horse
masseuse, Tony Schiro, and a jockey.
The 69-year old sustained a broken femur and possible head injuries as a result of the collision, which occurred on June 25, 2011.
Schiro, who is a licensed owner, got himself admitted in the Seattle and is scheduled to undergo a reconstructive surgery for his hip.
The freakish accident took place in the paddock area when just before the third race of the day was about to take place on the track. The two fillies, Cahill’s Ride and Wiley Watch got spooked with Cahill’s Ride bumped into Wiley Watch.
Both got agitated to the extent that they unseated their jockeys. They were later seen running full speed to the path adjacent to the track. In the commotion Cahill’s Ride hit Schiro in the stable area.
Witnesses reported that “All of a sudden right in the middle of it, all these people just running, I meant 50-60 people just running towards the track”.
Schiro as a result of the accident was immediately taken to the Auburn Regional Medical Center via an ambulance. He was later transferred to Auburn Regional Medical Center as the attendants took into notice the severity of his condition. He was air lifted
to reach Seattle.
Another sad outcome of the mishap was that Wiley Watch, who got injured, and, had multiple injuries, was later euthanized. Wiley Watch also collided with a tree and had arrived before Cahill’s Ride.
Speaking of the jockeys, Cahill’s Ride jockey, A.L Gutierrez escaped injuries, while the jockey of Wiley Watch, Leonel Camacho-Flores, was also taken to the Auburn Regional Medical Center.
Leonel Camacho-Flores was soon released following his treatment. Camacho-Flores commented on his fall by saying that, “He wasn't in position to control his horse and had to jump off”.
It is unusual that neither of the horses showed similar behaviour in public area before and nobody knows what may have caused the incident. Cahill’s Ride bore fewer injuries than Wiley Watch was sent back to the barn of Dan Markle, Dan Markle trains Cahill’s
Ride.
As for the race, it suffered a fate of being reduced to only four contestants and was won by Chilsey under jockey Javier Matias after a delayed start.
