Emerald Downs 2011 - Noosa Beach wins after bad start, Under jockey
Gallyn Mitchell
After the stellar performance at Emerald Downs by the five year old brown gelding, Noosa Beach, one can’t help but think that it is really too bad that such horses do not get the chance to shine because they are confined to a few race tracks.
Sired by Harbor The Gold, Noosa Beach turned a dull afternoon into a bright spectacle when despite a sluggish break, he managed to top the lot and won by3 ½ lengths.
Noosa Beach extended his winning streak to six when he captured both the Budweiser Handicap and purse of $50,000. He made an impressive run, full of hurdles, challenges coming from left on a muddy track, and managed to win after a slow start from the gates.
The run impressed many other people, including jockey, Gallyn Mitchell, who laid out the facts in a post race interview. He stated that they had a slow start and it had nothing to do with the horse. The conditions are to be taken into account, but the horse
was not standing in the gates the proper way and when they broke he had to twist and turn to get his footings right.
Noosa Beach is a talented horse and he was among real good horses on 20 June at Emerald Downs but it did not bother him as he jumped on to the inside and once he was there he picked up pace and zipped through the race track.
As jockey Gallyn Mitchell said, “He was running with the best horses and he was just toying with them”.
A special horse that also broke Emerald Downs record by registering his 10th stakes victory, Noosa Beach, looks to be a horse on a mission and trainer Doris Harwood has led the gelding to rule the Auburn track for quite some time now.
With Mt. Rainer Handicap and Longacres Miles still to be run in 2011, the prospect of winning those two looks pretty much a possibility for the brown gelding.
Noosa Beach finally has a chance to prove himself on a bigger stage, as big as the Breeders’ Cup. His connections will be l*****g their lips if Noosa Beach gets the break and starts in the most prestigious of races.
A remarkable record of 19 starts and 13 wins and a few stakes in the future will get him and his connections a ticket to Churchill Downs this year where the Breeders’ Cup will be held.
Come the bigger stage and fans will love to see Noosa Beach because the gelding can out-run the most powerful horses on the track, such as, Jersey Town, who won the Grade 1 Cigar Mile.
