ok im a 3rd level student. from ireland. so irish tax people will understand the irish forms and my question better.

now, i got my first job last november - december 2007, for the christmas rush in a clothes shop chain. i left at the end of december.

now i am working for summer in a local resteraunt in my home town, from june - august 2008.

i am still paying emergancy tax on my current waitressing job. how do i claim this back??

also i paid emergancy tax in my clothes shop job and still do not have this back.

the clothes shop sent out a p45 form to me a few months ago, but as this was a p45 for 2008 there was nothing on it, cause i was not working for them in 2008. it was 2007.

so how do i get my emergancy tax from the 2007 clothes shop job back?

i have also changed address since i was working there.

i am a student and starting back in a few weeks, i could really do with th cash asap.

please help, i get so confused by tax-speak , please spell it out to me exactly what i have to do?

and how do i get my emergancy tax from my curent job back??

  1. I am not clear where you are/were working - Uk or the Republic?

If you are or were working in the UK, for the last tax year, you need to write to your tax office (your employer will give you the address) and say this was your only job in the year and can you please have your tax back. For the current year, you need to ring your tax office and tell them this is your only job this year and can they please put you on 543L cumulative.

In future, if working in the UK, you can sign a form P38(s) if you are only working in the holidays.

  2. i rememmber this from my first job, you have to ring the tax people and get a tax code...expalin your adress change and they will assign you a tax code. i think i had to wait a few months and was aded to my wage slip as tax back. or speak to your employers to get them to sort it. but theres no harm in ringing the tax people. they are based in wales

  3. It is not clear from your question as to whether you are in Northern Ireland or Southern Ireland, or where you were employed. As you talk about form P45, I assume you come under British law, so will answer regarding that.

If the dress shop job was in the UK, and the waitressing job in the Republic, you will need to deal with each separately. I think in the first instance, you need to contact the tax office dealing with your first job. If you don't know where, any UK tax office can help you if you quote a British National Insurance number. Staff will tell you what further information is needed, may be form P85 or form P86, if you went from one country to another, which form depends on the direction on which you were going.
