Emergency, Convict cichlid injury during breeding. 10 points ?

I bought a male and female black convicts a week ago. The female turned very very dark and it is laying eggs i think. It does seem to be interested at the male convict that is same size as her. Everytime male convict approaches it's territory, it chases him and bite him.

The problem is that my male convict is seriously injured. Some fins are bitten off and its mouth was injured and turned dark. Last night i saw they are tapping and twistling, i thought they were pairing up but now realized they were fighting.

I put so much stress coat + will it recover? Will these two cichlids ever breed with each other when grow bigger?

  1. stop with the stress coat and get a breeder net. it can sit in the corner of your tank and you can put the injured convict in there. Are you sure you have a male and a female. the male when excited will have orange on him. he will get dark colored and clean a spot for the female to lay eggs. they get a little aggressive when breeding so you will see a little battering on the female. hopefully you have a pair but just watch them closely to see what is really happening. good luck and remember convicts get 6 or 7 inches long.
