How does it work if you're on holiday and need to come home for an emergency?

Its a long haul flight too, are there likely to be any seats left? Is it covered by your insurance?

  1. with regards to the insurance it depaends on what the emergancy is. I suggest you read through the cover of your insurance so you are clear on what is and isnt covered.

again depending on that the emergancy is depends on the flight. If it is a medical emergancy and you need treatment back home then theyw will get you on the next avaiable flight or get an air ambulance.

If the emergancy is someone back home that is ill etc then the tour company or your rep if you have one should help all they can to get you on the next avaiable flight but you would have to pay up front and claim your money back through your insurance after. So dont forget to keep all receipts.

  2. Most US airlines offer bereavement travel. This means they will sell you a discounted ticket in the time of a family emergency. It's up to the individual airline. When my grandma died, I went to the airport and spoke with a supervisor. I was given a first-class American Airlines seat for $100, which was a very nice gesture. But it all depends on the circumstances, the airlines, and their policies.

  3. depends on your flight company,

  4. You won't necessarily get a direct flight, particularly if you are on a package holiday as package flights are usually fully booked..

What will happen is, the holiday company will arrange to get you on the next available flight to the nearest airport to your destination.  They will also arrange onward travel if this is not your final destination airport.(e.g you may get a flight to Gatwick and a train ticket to your destination)

The costs should be covered by insurance, but check.

If You have independent insurance, including that sold by travel agents, you may have to cover the initial cost and claim from the insurance later.

If you have taken out the insurance approved and sold by the holiday company you will probably have everything done for you by the holiday company.

  5. If it is the life of a near relative in danger or seriously ill the insurance policy should cover the cost.

You will obviously take the next available seat on the next available plane.

  6. Should be covered by insurance.  You may have to be on stand-by though, if the flight is full.  Stand-by isn't a bad thing though, dress up nicely and they may put you in first class.
