Former FC Nantes midfielder, Emerse Fae, says that he feels a sense of incompleteness after he chose to retire from football due to recurring phlebitis issues
A month ago, Cote d’Ivoire midfielder, Emerse Fae abruptly announced his retirement from professional football at the age of just 28. The midfielder was a victim of calf phlebitis (blood clots forming in veins) and had no choice but to stop his playing career
when the doctors told him that the clotting may put his life in danger.
On Thursday, the Nantes-born Ivorian spoke about his grief and pain at not being able to realise his full potential due to phlebitis.
Fae says that though he was prepared for it, it was difficult for him to accept. Fae was unable to do anything about it and thus, chose to walk away from the game he loved.
“I have a sense of unfinished business. It’s hard to stop so young; I still had some great adventures to live for club and country.”
Fae says that he wanted to keep going on but became the prisoner of his own body. The injury slowed Fae due to which most clubs hesitated in signing him. In the year 2010, Fae had a great season with OGC Nice.
His performances led him to be linked with a move to LOSC Lille who were looking for a replacement for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Yohan-Cabaye-c37423 who had joined Newcastle United.
However, Fae once again got injured which forced Lille to look elsewhere (they bought Benoit Pedretti from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/AJ-Auxerre-c38247).
However, despite such a massive blow at such a young age, Faye is optimistic and says that the world is not finished for him.
“There is life after football. It’s true, after dropping my daughters to school, I don’t do anything special. What makes my morale goes up is that other doors will open. I also want to work on coaching badges.”
Being a footballer is a privilege few people in the world enjoy. However, one small injury can possibly end a career which means that in their short careers, footballers should make the best of the time they have as Fae did despite bowing out in an unkind
and unfortunate fashion.
