Question:

Emetophobia & Periods...?

I'm 12 years old and started my periods a while ago. Last time, vomit came up and went back down before I could do anything. The problem is that I'm emetophobic and if I think I will vomit, I will panic severely. The incident I mentioned above had me crying and crouching over the toilet till 4AM, wondering if I was going to be sick (I wasn't). Because of my phobia, I can't take tablets or medicines because they too make me vomit.

Does anyone have any tips for surviving my next period, as my mother won't take me to the doctor about my phobia.

  1. phobias are real shooga daddy.

i would sleep with a hot water bottle on your stomach if its uncomfortable at night. you could also ask your doctor if there is any drinkable painkillers you could take for it.

  2. my best advice to you would be to stop having your period

  3. Are you having the panic attacks because of the menstrual cramps and/or bloating you are having with your period?  (The thought of taking pain medication makes you think of vomiting?)

Or, are you having the panic attacks because you are actually having the menstrual cycle and that in itself is making you panic?  (The thought of menstruating and all that goes with caring/cleaning for that makes you think of vomiting?)

Either situation seems to require some type of intervention to overcome.  If your mother won't take you to a physician, perhaps your school nurse would have some suggestions to help you.

I would go for talking to your mother again.

  4. phobias arent real, just get over it
