Me & my husband are thinking of moving to Australia (we are both 26) my husband is an Electrician, please could you help me with the following -

Do you think Australia is facing recession?

Will my husband be able to find work?

My mother & father are thinking of retiring in Australia, what is the situation on this?

Where would be a nice place to live?

Thank you (from the UK & yes it's raining at the moment!) xx

  1. Australia's economy is still growing and because it's based on our huge mineral wealth for which there's enormous and growing demand from Asia, it's most unlikely that we will go into recession. If Australia does, it will be far, far worse in other countries.

There is a great deal of work for electricians in domestic, commercial and mining situations. I drove along the freeway past the city yesterday and was struck by the very large number of huge cranes on the skyline. We also have a lot of interstate migration with people coming from other states to our strong economy and great weather, so there's a heap of domestic construction as well to provide places for all the new people to live. All good news for an electrician.

The Australian city with the best weather is Brisbane. It's our third largest city, is very clean, leafy and pleasant and is the capital of Queensland, one of our two boom states (WA is the other). If you never want to have a real winter again, come to Brisbane and it also doesn't get as hot here in summer as in the southern cities.

It's not easy for older people like your parents, but not impossible (and they don't need to be wealthy). As your husband is an electrician, you will be each be able to get a permanent visa and as a PR, you can apply to have your parents join you if at least half of their children are permanently resident in Australia or if they have more children living permanently in Australia than any other country. For all information, go to: http://www.immi.gov.au/migrants/family/i...

This is a marvellous country to live in. Good luck!

  2. No, Australia has been booming, not facing a recession. We have had repeated interest rate rises to slow it down, these have now had an effect and now rates are starting to drop agian. The economy is healthy compared to other countries.

There is plenty of work for electricians.

Your parents would not be able to move to Australia, the cut-off age is 45 years old, unless they are extremely wealthy - see www.immi.gov.au for immigration info.

There aren't any bad areas of Australia, if you give us more idea about what sort of place you would like to live, climate etc then we can give you some info about different places.

  3. Try the australiana link at.....blackstump.com.au...... or the links at....about-australia.com.....australian embassy uk

The current mining boom is easing the burden of recession across the country.

  4. I would think your husband could do very well in Australia. We need good tradies and electricians. Melbourne is good. Brisbane is good. Depends on what sort of weather you look. I would advise against Sydney (I live there). It is a very expensive place to live and get around in. Can't really help you on your parents retirement. My mum came here around 70 years old, but we have now scrapped the reciprocal pension arrangements so they would have to be very self sufficient.
