Emigrating to the UK?

I am american and I plan on moving to the UK. Could someone please explain the ins and outs and the best way to do this? By the way, please do not try to convince me not to leave America. I am well aware of Britain's problems, but trust me, America's are much worse, and I have heard too many Brits move here and hate it to think anything else. Plus, culturally, I love the UK. I'd be proud to fly its flag (with a licence? lol.)

  1. as far as i know you have to apply from your country to the british embassy..im from canada and this is what they told me but im married to a british citizan so different visa what you want to apply is an indeffinate leave to remain.http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/ukresi...

  2. Having lived in Britain, I would ask you - "Have you ever been there?"

Before you make a life-changing decision like this, you need to visit the country for an extended period of time and then make your decision.

    Good Luck!

    Former Brit - now Canadian!

  3. The UK's membership in the EU has decreased the UK's need to recruit workers outside of the EU. In order to manage those entering the UK to work and whose citizenship is outside the UK and EU the UK has implemented a point based system. Technically this means unless you are highly educated, have a history of productive employment, or have a skill that is in demand most likely you will not be able to immigrate to the UK on a worker.

Links below will provide you with some further information on this subject.

  4. Well, your first concern is going to be getting a work visa...not easy.  you need to start by researching visa requirements. Also check out the books and articles on the 2nd page below.

  5. Check out the home office website for information on immigration but be prepared for a long process!

It's not easy for people to emigrate here from outside the EU.  Lots of red tape!

Compared to the USA (I've lived there as well) Britain is a much higher cost of living country.  So be prepared for higher prices and more taxes!  For example, fuel is more than double the price in the UK as it is in the USA!

  6. We would be glad of an immigrant who is not a muslim, eastern European or african.  Please don't go to england but come to scotland.  We are nicer people and the country has less illegal immigrants.  Please only fly a scottish flag.
