Emilio Bonifacio may not miss the rest of the season as X-rays are negative - MLB Update
As soon as the Miami Marlins’ second baseman Emilio Bonifacio injured his left thumb the other day, their manager Ozzie Guillen immediately concluded that the hitter will probably be out for the whole season.
In view of the thumb surgery that Bonifacio underwent in May, Guillen was not entirely wrong in believing so. However, the fact his X-rays are negative gives reason to believe that he may come back soon.
Given the fact that the Marlins’ offence is depleted after some of their hitters have been traded by the management, injury by Bonifacio is a huge setback. For as long as he remains out, Miami will be without a permanent hitter in the line-up. Therefore,
the slump that their offence is suffering is currently going to last.
In light of the fact that their right fielder Giancarlo Stanton has yet to appear in the line-up after getting injured earlier, absence of Bonifacio is a bad omen for Miami’s offence.
However, the news that Bonifacio may be back in the season again will be heartening for manager Guillen. Earlier it was feared that the 15-day disabled list that he was put on will mean that he is out of the season for a number of weeks, but it is not the
case now.
Meanwhile, the General Manager Michael Hill is hopeful of his return at the earliest after he learns the outcome of the X-rays.
“The X-rays were negative, so that’s a positive,” Hill said.
The actual status of where the second baseman stands in terms of returning in the season will be known once he is checked up by the surgeon. Guillen wants to believe that Bonifacio will not take more than 15 days to come back, but he states that all depends
on the examination by the doctor.
“They’re going to take a look at it and see if everything is what it was when he repaired it,” Guillen said. “He’s going to be out for 15 days and, hopefully, no more than that. We’ve got to wait until Monday or Tuesday to see what the doctor says.”
Once the doctor evaluates Bonifacio, it will be interesting to see how many days they recommend him to stay away from the field.
