Emily Brunemann upsets Angela Maurer in Women’s 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup, Honk Kong
American beginner, Emily Brunemann sent an alarming message to her superior swimmers by upsetting Angela Maurer for the title of Women’s 10km Marathon Swimming World Cup, on Sunday, October 2, in Repulse Bay, Hong Kong.
Repulse Bay was the last of the seven stops of the Marathon series, which was organised by the international sports governing body, Federation International de Natation (FINA). Brunemann crushed the hopes of arena’s beloved Angela Maurer of Germany by snatching
the title of the event in a fantastic time of 2 hours, 10 minutes and 59.05 seconds.
Maurer, being the highest point scorer of world cup series was the top contender for gold medal. She grabbed a gold medal at the third stop of series in Setubal, Portugal, while she also ended second in the sixth leg of the series in Shantou, China.
Maurer is also the gold medallist of 25km open water discipline at the 2009 Rome World Championships, while she won a silver medal in the same event at the 2011 Shanghai World Championships.
She was visibly strong for top spot of the race but an American swimmer got in her way. Maurer was leading her competitors in majority of the race and she remained in a strong position for gold medal. Her endurance was unmatchable in the first-half, which
led her to dictate terms to all competitors, but Brunemann turned strong on her in the final 2 kilometres of the event.
The American displayed great combination of power and endurance in the final part of the race, which troubled the German rival and she eventually gained a prominent lead over her.
Brunemann’s unstoppable efforts in the 10km discipline placed her exactly three seconds ahead of her strongest rival, Maurer, who crossed the finishing line with an impressive timing of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 02.95 seconds.
This was Brunemann’s first title winning effort while Maurer’s fifth participation and third position in the Marathon World Cup. Her defeat in the concluding stop of the series did not cause any trouble to Maurer, as she remains on top of the FINA 2011 Open
Water rankings with a highest score of 98 points, whereas, Brunemann is on fourth position with 60 points.
The third spot of the race was secured by Maurer’s team-member, Nadine Reichert, who remained nearly five seconds slower than her preceding swimmer and submitted a time of 2 hours, 11 minutes and 07.80 seconds.
Brunemann was delighted with her first gold win at a FINA event. Furthermore, the competition concluded after the conclusion of all events, while the spectators acknowledged the breath-taking efforts of Brunemann and Maurer.
