Emily Seebohm captures Women’s 200m IM gold: Day three – 2012 NSW State Open Championships
Olympic gold medallist, Emily Seebohm lived up to the expectations of her fans by capturing the title of Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) on concluding day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre
on Sunday, February 12.
Seebohm, who obtained gold medal of the 4*100m medley relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, devastated all struggles of her challengers and ensured her place on top of the podium for gold medal.
The 19-year-old Seebohm showered her expertise in the initial lap of the event, where she remained unimaginably ahead of her competitors and clocked a time of 27.85 seconds. She was followed by three-time Olympic champion, Stephanie Rice, who remained almost
one second slower from Seebohm and posted a time of 28.91 seconds.
Seebohm went full rampant in the second lap and strengthened her position for top finish by submitting a time of 1 minute and 00.54 seconds. She was trailed by the 23-year-old Rice, who recently recovered from the shoulder surgery, concluded her first half
with an effort of 1 minute and 03.32 seconds.
The crowd went wild with the scintillating struggles of Seebohm in the third lap, where she extended her lead to almost three seconds by producing a time of 1 minute and 39.41 seconds. Rice stayed nearly one body length slower from Seebohm and reported an
effort of 1 minute and 42.45 seconds.
Rice enhanced her speed in the final lap but it was too late to overpower Seebohm, who cemented her place on the victory stand for gold medal by clocking 2 minutes and 11.55 seconds. Rice remained nearly two seconds away from her former finisher and ended
up second with timing of 2 minutes and 13.84 seconds.
She was chased by Natalie Wiegersma, who stepped on the podium for third position with an effort of 2 minutes and 14.81 seconds.
With her fascinating effort in the IM discipline, Seebohm has sent an alarming message to her competitors and expressed her desire of excelling in the same discipline at the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games. Furthermore, the meet concluded after the
completion of all events.
