Emily Seebohm excels in Women’s 50m backstroke semi-final – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Emily Seebohm of Nudgee Brothers excelled in the semi-final of Women’s 50m backstroke on opening day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide on Thursday, March 15.
The 19-year-old Seebohm stayed nearly one stroke ahead of her closest competitor, Sophie Edington of Melbourne and qualified into the final round as top fastest swimmer.
The teenager spoiled the party of her competitors by dominating the single-lap backstroke discipline. She clocked an effort of 27.97 seconds to acquire top position of the event. Seebohm stayed just 0.46 seconds slower from the Australian mark of 27.51 seconds,
made by Edington in 2009.
Her scintillating effort was 0.44 seconds ahead of 27-year-old Edington, who transpired on the finishing wall as second best swimmer with an effort of 28.41 seconds.
The third qualification spot of the discipline was earned by Tayliah Zimmer of Nunawading, who stayed just half a second slower from her former finisher and appeared on the finishing end for third position by posting a time of 28.91 seconds.
Zimmer was followed by Grace Loh of Melbourne, who stayed 0.11 seconds away from her preceding swimmer and hit the finishing end with the timing of 29.02 seconds.
The fifth position of the discipline was secured by Rachel Goh of Unattached, who was 0.09 seconds slower from Loh and posted an effort of 29.11 seconds to reach the final round. The 25-year-old Goh was trailed by Wan Ruqui of China, who proved her eligibility
for the sixth finest qualification spot by submitting a time of 29.33 seconds.
The 22-year-old Ruqui was chased by Hayley Baker of Melbourne, who was just 0.01 seconds slower from her foregoing competitor and ended her race with an effort of 29.34 seconds.
Subsequently, Madison Wilson of St Peters Western Swim Club was just 0.04 seconds apart from her preceding swimmer and tapped the finishing end with the timing of 29.38 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, the session completed after the conclusion of all listed events whereas these swimmers will meet each other in the final round of 50m discipline.
