Emily Seebohm eyes 100m backstroke gold medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games – Swimming News
Olympic gold medallist and multi-stroke Australian specialist, Emily Seebohm is eyeing the 100m backstroke gold medal at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 19-year-old Seebohm, who stunned the arena with her scintillating form in the double lap backstroke discipline at the New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships last week, has now taken charge to make her country proud at the upcoming Olympic Games.
Seebohm captured gold medal of the 4*100m medley relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Subsequently, she excelled in the individual event and pocketed a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke while a silver medal in the 4*100m medley relay at the 2009 Rome World Championships.
With her blistering performance, she grabbed eight medals at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. She won three gold medals in the events of 100m backstroke, 4*100m freestyle and 4*100m medley relay while two silver medals in 100m freestyle and 200m Individual Medley. She also claimed three bronze medals in 50m backstroke, 200m backstroke and 50m butterfly at the same Games.
Seebohm’s effort in the backstroke discipline at the NSW meet is the fastest in the 2012 early world rankings so far. She clocked a time of 59.36 seconds that is considerably ahead of Missy Franklin’s 59.92 seconds effort at the 2012 Austin Grand Prix in January.
“I get so close to it and I really want to do it so hopefully it comes at trials because I'm waiting for it. It's looking good at the moment but I've just got to keep training hard and work at taper and work at my skills and hopefully that sub 59 comes,” Seebohm said.
“It's already a big year because it's an Olympic year but hopefully it's a big year for me to step up and make my mark in swimming,” she added.
Seebohm’s fastest time in the early-season is detrimental to her competitors and her desire of excelling in the same discipline at the 2012 London Games has surely shattered expectations of her challengers.
With just a month is left in the Australian Selection Trials, the teenager is training hard to improve her pace before the London Games.
