Emily Seebohm plans to compete in five events at the Australian Nationals despite of her illness
Australian record holder for the Women’s 100m back-stroke, Emily Seebohm, has announced to compete in her five individual events at the Australian Nationals, despite of her swine flu illness. Seebohm, who suffered from swine flu for almost three weeks, is
now recovering from her poor health.
Seebohm suffered from the swine flu symptoms after she returned from the New South Wales (NSW) Championships, last month. The moment she got home from the event, she started suffering from fever, which was then coupled with cold. The next day she was unable
to move herself outside bed and her fever got control of her whole body.
The swimmer’s initial tests revealed that she was suffering from Influenza A, so her medication did not provide any fruitful results. Her extreme illness forced her to the hospital, where her tests revealed that she is suffering from the latest stress of
swine flu.
The 18-year-old Seebohm had attended only a month of proper training when she was stuck with the disease. Now, the Australian female star is on her way to full recovery and ready to compete at the Australian National Championships in Sydney, this Friday.
The disease put a stop to her training schedule for almost three weeks and when she returned to her coach, Matt Brown, he advised her to skip the Women’s 100m butterfly as it is ahead of her main event, which is the 100m back-stroke.
The coach advised her to defend her title with all her energy, but the teenager is determined to give her 100 percent in all the schedule events. Despite her coach’s suggestion, she has persisted with her decision of competing in five individual events,
including the 100m butterfly event.
Seebohm had a wonderful 2010 season, as she first smashed eight medals at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games. She then won two gold medals and four silver medals at the Pan Pacific Championships.
The Australian swimmer will compete in the 100m butterfly on the first day of the championships and she calls it very crucial saying that the first day of the championship will decide her fate for the rest of the week. She said, “I think I will be more ready
for the 100m butterfly and the 100m backstroke and the 100m freestyle, but I don't know if I will have the back end for the 200m freestyle and backstroke.”
If Seebohm performs well at the Australian titles, then she will surely book her spots for the upcoming 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
