Emily Seebohm pockets Women’s 100m backstroke gold: Day two – 2012 NSW State Open Championships
Olympic gold medallist, Emily Seebohm of Australia impressed the aquatic crowd by pocketing the title of Women’s 100m backstroke on second day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships at the Sydney Olympic Aquatic Centre on Saturday, February
11.
The 19-year-old Seebohm, who is a key swimmer of the Australian international relay team, upset her challengers by proving her eligibility for gold medal. With her immaculate efforts, Seebohm was the only swimmer to post a sub one minute effort in the double
lap backstroke swim.
She won gold medal of the 4*100m medley relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. She captured a gold medal in the 100m backstroke at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games while achieved a bronze finish in the same discipline at the 2009 World Championships in
Rome.
She remained nearly a half body length ahead of her subsequent competitor, Belinda Hocking of ALBU in the first lap. Seebohm completed her initial lap of the race in time of 29.26 seconds while Hocking remained 0.50 seconds behind and ended her first lap
with an effort of 29.76 seconds.
Hocking was trailed by 20-year-old Grace Loh, who was just 0.18 seconds slower and reached the other end of the pool by reporting a time of 29.94 seconds.
Seebohm displayed her phenomenal efforts in the second half and cemented her place on the medal rostrum for gold medal by clocking a fascinating time of 59.36 seconds. She was trailed by 21-year-old Hocking, who remained nearly one second behind the champion
and appeared on the finishing end for silver medal by posting a time of 1 minute and 00.17 seconds.
The second position holder was trailed by Loh, who stayed almost one body length slower from her foregoing swimmer and stepped on the podium for bronze medal with the timing of 1 minute and 01.09 seconds.
Seebohm expressed happiness over her remarkable victory in the two-lap backstroke event while the position holders received awards and accolades for their ruthless efforts after the session. In addition, the championship will end on February 12 after the
completion of all planned events.
