Emily Seebohm wins Women’s 50m backstroke heats: Day one – EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships
Emily Seebohm of Nudgee Brothers lived up to the expectations of her fans by winning qualifying rounds of the Women’s 50m backstroke on primary day of the 2012 EnergyAustralia Swimming Championships at the South Australia Aquatic and Leisure Centre in Adelaide
on Thursday, March 15.
The top two finishers of every event at the Australian Championships will confirm their berth in the national team to the forthcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 19-year-old Seebohm demonstrated her gruelling efforts in the single lap backstroke discipline. With her relentless efforts, she became prominent for the top finish in the initial 15 metres of the race. Her smothering efforts placed her prominently ahead
of her competitors and hit the finishing end with the timing of 28.02 seconds to enter the final round.
Her stupendous effort remained 0.69 seconds ahead of Melbourne’s Sophie Edington, who occupied second best finishing spot of the event by clocking a time of 28.71 seconds. She was followed by her team-member, Grace Loh, who stayed 0.59 seconds behind and
settled on the finishing end as third finisher with the timing of 29.30 seconds.
Similarly, Loh’s teammate, Hayley Baker transpired on the finishing end as fourth fastest finisher as she posted a time of 29.33 seconds.
In the meantime, arena enjoyed scintillating efforts of Geoffrey Huegill, who dominated the preliminary rounds of Men’s 50m butterfly. The 33-year-old Huegill stayed prominently ahead of his following swimmers and ended his race with the timing of 23.74
seconds.
He was trailed by Christopher Wright of Southport Olympic Swimming Club, who stayed 0.22 seconds slower from his preceding finisher and clocked a time of 23.96 seconds. Wright remained 0.08 seconds ahead of her following swimmer, Andrew Lauterstein, who
clinched third finest qualification spot of the event by producing an effort of 24.04 seconds.
The crowd appreciated dazzling performances of all participants in the single lap backstroke and butterfly discipline. In addition, the session ended after the conclusion of all scheduled events while these participants will face each other in the semi-final
round, where the top fastest swimmers will try to secure the podium.
