Emily Selig and Stephen Parkes impresses in swimming events – 2011 Australian University Games
Emerging Australian stars, Emily Selig and Stephen Parkes became the spotlight of the arena as they claimed the gold medal of Women’s 200m Individual Medley (IM) and Men’s 200m IM respectively, on the initial day of the 2011 Australian University Games.
The event concluded on September 27, at the Gold Coast Aquatic Centre, Queensland.
Apart from the dazzling efforts of these Universiade swimmers, the arena also witnessed Women’s 4*100m Medley Relay.
University of Melbourne’s Selig dominated the Women’s 200m IM by obtaining the gold medal of the event in a time of 2 minutes and 22.09 seconds. Her effort in the four-lap IM discipline stunned the arena, as she remained prominently ahead of her following
swimmer, Samantha Bennett of Monash University, who clocked a time of 2 minutes and 23.47 seconds for silver medal. QLD University of Technology’s Grant Irvine emerged on the podium for third position as she ended her swim with an effort of 2 minutes and 25.47
seconds.
Selig’s immaculate effort in the IM discipline made her the centre of attention for everyone as she sustained her fastest qualification spot and proved her passion for the title.
Next was the equivalent event in Men’s category, where University of Sydney’s Parkes crushed the hopes of his compatriots and took away the title of event in 2 minutes and 10.51 seconds. Though the champion remained 1.92 seconds slower than the championship
record but his mettle performance in the event was the evidence of his extensive hard work.
Parkes’ dominating effort in the Men’s event placed him 1.58 seconds ahead of his closest rival, University of Melbourne’s Raymond Mak, who reached the victory stand for silver medal with a timing of 2 minutes and 12.09 seconds. The third spot of the race
was claimed by University of NSW’s Andrew Kennedy, who was 1.19 seconds behind Mak and completed his race in a wonderful time of 2 minutes and 13.28 seconds for bronze medal.
In the meantime, University of Melbourne relay team outshined in the Women’s 4*100m Medley relay as they clocked a time of 4 minutes and 20.05 seconds. They were followed by QLD University of Technology, which won the silver medal with an effort of 4 minutes
and 35.35 seconds. University of Queensland followed them on the podium for bronze medal with a timing of 4 minutes and 42.45 seconds.
The session completed after the conclusion of all scheduled swimming events, while the arena was delighted with the heart-winning swims of all podium finishers. Furthermore, the top finishers of each event were called upon the medal rostrum, where they received
their awards and accolades.
