Emily Slabe and Steven Zimmerman pocket 200m back-stroke gold: Day four – YMCA Long Course Nationals
Emily Slabe and Steven Zimmerman pocketed the gold medal of Women’s and Men’s 200m back-stroke meets respectively, on day four of the 2011 Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) Long Course Nationals in Atlanta, Georgia.
Slabe emerged as the fastest swimmer of the Women’s 200m event, as she remained undisputed and posted a top finest time of 2 minutes and 17.93 seconds. Her time was nearly two seconds behind the national record of 2 minutes and 15.38 seconds, set by Tricia
Weaner of West Shore-PA in 2004.
The gold medallist was almost three seconds away from her closest competitor, Sydney King of l*****g-OH, who secured the podium for the silver medal, by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 20.70 seconds. She was followed by Ali Galyer of Middle Tyger-SC,
who remained just 0.12 seconds behind the silver medallist and reported a third fastest time of 2 minutes and 20.82 seconds for bronze medal.
Galyer’s team-member, Keelin McNamara was the fourth finest swimmer of the swim, as she was 1.14 seconds behind her former finisher and posted a time of 2 minutes and 21.96 seconds. She was trailed by Megan Alexander of North Shore-MA, who remained in a
lead of 0.49 seconds over her foregoing competitor and posted a time of 2 minutes and 22.45 seconds. Next was Lindsay Temple of SomersetValleyNJ, who ended her swim in a sixth best time of 2 minutes and 22.78 seconds.
In the Men’s corner, Zimmerman of Countryside-OH won the arena’s hearts by improving the national mark of 200m back-stroke. He posted a time of 2 minutes and 01.33 seconds to break the record of 2 minutes and 01.69 seconds, made by Patrick Schirk of Pottstown-PA
in 2005.
Zimmerman was trailed by Dylan Davis of Anne Arundel-MD, who was just 4.96 seconds behind the gold medallist and clocked 2 minutes and 06.29 seconds for silver medal. Grant Alef of Kishwaukee-IL was the bronze medallist of the event, as he submitted a time
of 2 minutes and 07.46 seconds.
The top-three finishers were followed by Kyle Patnode of West Cook-IL, who emerged as the fourth finest swimmer of the event, with a timing of 2 minutes and 08.78 seconds. Aaron Athanas of North Shore-MA was the fifth position holder of the four-lap race,
as he posted a time of 2 minutes and 09.74 seconds. He was followed by Matt O’ Donnell of Sarasota-FL, who ended his swim sixth in 2 minutes and 09.93 seconds.
The session ended after the completion of all events, while the winners were awarded medals for their stupendous swims after the session.
