Emily Steer wins Women 100m backstroke gold: Day one – 2012 NSW Metropolitan Championships
Emily Steer of GLST won the title of Long Course 100m backstroke race in Women 14 Year Olds age category on first day of the 2012 New South Wales (NSW) Metropolitan Championships at the Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Saturday, March 3.
The Metropolitan Championships provided a platform to Australian age groups swimmers to compete with each other in their main events and claim national titles.
The 14-year-old Steer displayed her stupendous efforts in the start of the race and prevailed over her competitors for the crown of the event. Her fastest kicks coupled with her powerful arm stroke played a vital role in her victory.
With the help of her quickest start, she gained slight lead over her opponents and appeared on the other end of the pool with a fastest effort of 32.68 seconds. She was trailed by Michaela Hokin of MTAN, who stayed just 0.29 seconds slower and covered the
same distance with the timing of 32.97 seconds.
Hokin was trailed by BAYS’s Alessandra Colombini, who stayed 0.47 seconds slower from her preceding swimmer and ended her first half of the race with a timing of 33.44 seconds.
The same continued in second lap, where all swimmers went full rampant in an attempt to escape each other over the finishing end. Steer remained dominant over her challengers in the second half of the swim and proved her eligibility for gold medal by clocking
a fantastic time of 1 minute and 06.89 seconds.
Steer improved the former titleholder’s mark of 1 minute and 07.49 seconds, made by Rebecca Booth of ABBT in 2010.
The gold medallist was chased by Hokin, who stayed just 0.13 seconds slower and seized second best spot on the medal rostrum by reporting a time of 1 minute and 07.02 seconds. Hokin remained 1.56 seconds ahead of Colombini, who earned third fastest spot
of the event by clocking a time of 1 minute and 08.58 seconds.
The crowd appreciated phenomenal efforts of all teenage swimmers in their exclusive events whereas the podium finishers were awarded accolades for their undisputed struggles after the session.
