Emirates Team New Zealand skipper Dean Barker happy with team’s win: 2011 America’s Cup World Series
A successful sail from the Emirates Team New Zealand on the first day of 2011 America’s Cup World Series Cascais Trophy saw them lead the overall standings of the nine-yacht fleet from around the
world. The skipper Emirates Team NZ, Dean Barker is happy with his team’s performance and overall lead even under unideal conditions.
The wind refused to blow around Cascais waters throughout the first day of America’s Cup World Series Cascais Trophy, which is the oldest trophy of the sport of sailing. A lighter three knots breeze
variably gusted over the racing area in all three races of the opening day which made it difficult for all the teams to sail across the race site.
However, Emirates Team NZ sailed their AC45 catamarans competitively to claim the top spot at Cascais with 26 points. Dean Barker, the skipper helm, is happy with the team’s success overall.
While speaking to the media, Barker said, “Racing is very different in light winds but it’s really good that these boats can sail in this weather. We are happier with more wind… but with the lighter
winds, all the teams levelled. The lack of wind becomes an equalizer. Today all the teams have had their opportunity, so it becomes more competitive.”
