Emirates Team New Zealand takes lead on Day 1 of 2011 America’s Cup World Series at Plymouth
Emirates Team New Zealand dominated the America’s Cup World Series on Day 1 after a superb sail under ideal conditions at Plymouth race course. The New Zealand AC45 catamaran won two of
three races of the day to finish it on top of the overall standings with 28 points. Artemis Racing finished on second place with 26 points after three races.
The weather conditions on Day 1 were ideal for a sound sail, as the south westerly wind blew from around 15 to 20 knots over the racing area in Plymouth with heavy gusts. However, the
breeze got lighter as the day progressed.
Emirates Team New Zealand gained two first and a third place in the three races of the day to top the eight-boat fleet. Artemis Racing grabbed the second spot with 26 points after winning
two second places and a third place in the races of Day 1. On third spot is Spithill’s Oracle Racing, who also earned 26 points in three races.
While speaking to the local media at the end of Day 1, Artemis Racing skipper Terry Hutchinson said, “It was pretty awesome to see a crowd like that supporting the sport. There were a
lot of public on the Plymouth Hoe and around the course. I don’t think anyone expected something like that. Imagine what could happen with a sunny day.”
