Emirates airline extends deal with Omega Dubai Desert Classic
Emirates airline has extended its sponsorship deal with the Omega Dubai Desert Classic after its booming success in 2010.
Sir Maurice Flanagan, Executive Vice Chairman of the Emirates airline disclosed the news in a press conference. He said that it was a great honour for the airline to sponsor the event in Emirates and they would continue the relationship in future.
Flanagan said, “Although we are proud of our involvement in golf around the world, with prestigious properties such as the Ryder Cup, the Omega Dubai Desert Classic is particularly special to us, having been part of it since the inaugural event in 1989 when
we were making our first forays into sports sponsorship.”
He further elaborated the reason behind the extension of the sponsorship.
“We have witnessed the tournament develop into one of the biggest events on the European Tour International Schedule, helping establish Dubai as world-class golfing destination in the process, and Emirates is committed to helping it continue to grow from
strength to strength,” he said.
Due to the extension in the sponsorship, the purse and the field is expected to grow as well. Lee Westwood has already agreed to tee off in the upcoming event. Moreover, two-time winner Tiger Woods has also confirmed his participation in the tournament.
This will be Woods’ third attempt on the title and if he manages to win it, he will become the second player after Ernie Els to win the trophy thrice.
Mohamed Juma Buamaim, vice-chairman and CEO of ‘Golf in Dubai’ thanked Emirates airline for its utmost support in promotion of sports in the region.
Buamaim said that if Emirates continued its support in the future, it would become easier for ‘Golf in Dubai’ to make the state centre of all the golf activities in the region.
Apart from being the major sponsor for Omega Dubai Desert Classic, Emirates has signed the deal of being the official partner of the European team in the 2012 Ryder Cup. Moreover, it has allowed its passengers to carry a set of golf clubs free of charge
on all its flights en route to Dubai.
