Swedish road champion, Emma Johansson, suffered two broken collarbones during a training ride on the island of Gran Canaria.
Her bike collided with a fast moving car and the cyclist was immediately taken to the hospital. It is reported by Sportbladet that the Johansson might also suffer from a broken arm.
She won a silver medal during the Beijing Olympics 2008 and was looking forward to the top podium position at the London Olympics.
However, the cyclist still believes that she will recover in time for the mega event.
The 28-year-old does not have to worry about her selection as she has already been shortlisted to represent her nation at the 2012 Olympic Games scheduled from July 28 to August 12, 2012.
She stated, "Now it's important that the injury heals completely," Johansson said. "But I have no pain in my legs and I can breathe so I might be able to pedal soon".
Emma currently rides for Team Hitec Products – Mistral Home, after starting her professional career in 2005, with Team Bizkaia Panda software Durango.
She spent a period of three years with her first team and also spent one year each with Team Vlaanderen–Capri Sonne–T-Interim (2007) and AA-Drink Cycling Team (2008).
She had a terrific 2011 season, with a second place finish at the UCI standing and a solid third position at the World Cup. Dutch rider, Marianne Vos is currently leading the UCI standings.
Johansson secured a number of victories, Internationale Thuringen Rundfahrt, Omloop Het Nieusblad and Swedish road title are the major highlights of her season.
She secured the second spot at the Trofeo Alfredo Binda-Comune di Cittiglio 2009 and stood third at the Ronde van Vlaanderen.
Emma wore the UCI World Cup leader’s jersey and is only the second Swedish cyclist to do so after Susanne Ljungskog.
The cyclist is positive to recover from the crash and is optimistic about her condition. She believes that the circumstances could have been even worst.
Emma told Sportbladet, "I am totally disabled now, I drink through straws and need to be fed when I eat".
She recently married the former Norwegian cyclist, Martin Vestby, who is also her manager. Martin was present at the time of the accident and he is positive that Johansson will make a quick recovery to ride the season ahead.
