Emma Johansson wins the second stage of 2011 International Thuringen Rundfahrt der Frauen
Hitec Products-UCK team’s Emma Johansson won the second stage and also took the overall lead in 2011 Internationale Thuringen Rundfahrt der Frauen in Greiz on Wednesday, July 20.
The 27-year-old Swedish professional cyclist took a total of 2 hours, 52 minutes and 10 seconds to cover the distance of 110 kilometres.
Previously, Emma took the Ronde van Drenthe and won the overall UCI Women Road World Cup. She also took the second spot in La Fleche Wallonne Feminine.
Vicki Whitelaw of Australia was the runner-up and Amy Pieters of Skil-Koga Cycling finished third.
A group of nine cyclists crossed the finish line with the same timing of Emma, while Svetlana Boubnenkova (Russian Federation) also showed her good effort.  She tried her best to catch the leading cyclists, but failed and grabbed the 10th spot with a difference
of 1 minute and 34 seconds.
With 25 kilometres to go, an original break came from a group of 13 cyclists including Whitelaw, Shara Gillow, Johansson, Pieters, Linda Villumsen, Trixi Worrack, Judith Arndt, Amber Neben, Emma Pooley, Fabiana Luperini, Noemi Cantele, Claudia Hausler and
Sylwia Kapusta.
After 70 kilometres they build a lead of 2 minutes and 20 seconds, but Arndt, Pooley, Kapusta and Worrack were dropped the race and joined the peloton.
The remaining nine cyclists managed to gain a lead of 2 minutes and 38 seconds with 15 kilometres to go, Stvetlana launched the attack, but failed and Johansson crossed the finish-line first ahead of the other cyclists.
The two cyclists, Venera Absaliyamova (Russian Federation) and Anne Guzman (Juvederm-Specialized) were disqualified from the race.
Emma Johansson also took an overall standing with a timing of 6 hours, 5 minutes and 58 seconds, while Amber Neben of HTC-Highroad Women was in second place with 7 seconds behind the Swedish.
Amy Pieters of Skil-Koga Cycling finished third with a difference of 13 seconds ahead of Noemi Cantele.
Emma Pooley (Garmin-Cervelo) took the overall title of King of Mountain with 11 points ahead of Johansson.
The next stage will start in Schleiz and all the cyclists will cover the distance of 130 kilometres.
