Emma Johansson wins the third stage in 2011 Giro Del trentino Alto Adige-Sudtirol
Hitec Products-UCK team’s Emma Johansson won the mass sprint of third and final stage of 2011 Giro del trentino Alto Adige on Sunday, June 19. Judith Arndt retained her overall leader yellow jersey.
The race started in Castel Thun and ended in Cles. The 27-year-old Swedish took a total of 1 hour, 56 minutes and 59 seconds to cover the distance of 72 kilometres.
The race leader, Judith, was in the second spot and Malgorzata Jasinska of S.C Michela Fanini Rox finished in the third position.
HTC-Highroad Sports' Director, Jens Zemke, said, "Judith got a time bonus which strengthened her lead, and then she chased down a lot of dangerous attacks, It wasn't clear we would win for sure, there were a lot of good rivals here."
Stephanie Pohl from Germany was in good form, but failed to catch the 29th rider and grabbed the 30th spot with a difference of 15 seconds, ahead of Stephanie and Nicole Cooke.
A three-person break formed early in the stage, which comprised of Svetlana Bubnenkova (Team P.C.W.), Judith Arndt (HTC Highroad Women) and Elena Berlato (Top Girls Fassa Bortolo).
All of them built a lead of three seconds over the peloton, but Elena Berlato unable to maintain her pace and caught by the peloton. Svetlana took the first sprint ahead of Judith.
Emma Johansson attacked, but failed However, Svetlana maintain her pace and won final sprint of the stage.
Svetlana also won the King of Mountain (KOM) of the day with 5 points ahead of Ina Teutenberg and Emma Pooley.
Judith Arndt of HTC-Highroad Women took overall lead with a timing of 6 hours, 13 minutes and 23 seconds. Emma Johansson was the runner-up with a difference of 19 seconds, ahead of Tatiana Guderzo of SC MCipollini Giordana.
Jens further added, “She did a super performance and she got really good back-up from her team-mates, too. Ina did a great job again as well, taking second on the first climb of the day and supporting Judith there, and then leading Judith out in the final
sprint.”
Garmin-Cervelo team’s Emma Pooley was in the fourth spot with difference of 21 seconds.
