Emma Pooley wins Trofeo Alferdo Binda race 2011 – Cycling update
English professional cyclists Emma Pooley of the Garmin Cervelo team won the UCI women World Cup 2011 on Sunday. Olympic silver medalist Emma covered the distance of 121.4 kilo-metres in 3 hours, 8 minutes and 17 seconds.
Sweden’s Emma Johasson, sponsored by Hitec Products Uck, finished second with the difference of 1 min, 32 sec. Annemiek Van Vleuten of the Netherlands finished third. Chantal Blaak, Judith Arndt and Grace Verbeke were in sixth, seventh and eighth place respectively.
Pooley is considered one of the best climbers in the group and certainly took the hills as an advantage for herself. The past has shown she is most likely to win on a hilly track and she did that. She usually has adapted an attacking approach wherever there
are climbs.
“The race had been quite active from the start to be honest,” Pooley explained, “it was always fast; on the climb we, as a team, were attacking, and over the climb as well, and there was a reduced group by the time we got down the descent.
“I think I attacked, maybe 3km from where you go through the start/finish; it was uphill, but it wasn’t a hill.” After escaped from the Peloton, Pooley was face almost 70 kilo-metres alone at the head of the competition and he cross all the laps easily.
Previously 25-year-old Emma Pooley won the 2008 Trofeo Binda. That race was also a long solo attack, very similar to this year but this race was bit longer compared to the previous one. In the 2008 race she covered the distance in 1hrs and 7 min.
Pooley mentioned that they had been very lucky to win the race. The presence of cobbles and hectic sprints made it very difficult for the entire team but they kept on trying harder and harder and managed to get out of that hole to emerge as proud winners.
She explained, “It’s very helpful to be in such a strong team, where behind I know that my teammates are covering everything.”
There were seven packed racing tournaments that took place in the past seven days. Which include, Track World Championships, Volta a Catalunya, Ghent-Wevelgem, Dwars door Vlaanderen, Criterium International, E3 Prijs, Tour de Normandie and Trofeo Alfredo
Binda.
British riders are involved in all the big events and they made a total of 15 appearances in the top three international events. According to the team plan Pooley goes into the women's Tour of Flanders on Sunday.
