Emmitt Smith Apologizes for Forgetting to Mention Florida in Speech
This past weekend saw the most productive running back in history enter the Hall of Fame in Emmitt Smith. Smith holds all major rushing records in history, spending most of his career with his favourite team growing up, the Dallas Cowboys.
Smith gave a heartfelt speech when being inducted. He thanked Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and the organization for giving him the chance to live his boyhood dream. He thanked Troy Aikman and Michael Irvin, the star quarterback and wide receiver, who with Smith, formed the most potent offence of the 90’s. He thanked his offensive line, and he burst into tears when thanking his lead blocker, fullback Darryl ‘Moose’ Johnston for making so many sacrifices for him and treating Emmitt like his little brother.
Smith also thanked his coaches, family and friends for making him the man he is. Regrettably, Emmitt Smith forgot to thank his university. Smith spent his collegiate career with the Florida Gators and forgot to mention it in his speech.
"I sincerely sincerely apologize for not mentioning you last night in my speech Gator Nation," Smith tweeted. "I just got caught up in everything please charge it to my mind not my heart!!"
The running back got into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. In his career, he rushed for 18,355 yards, 164 touchdowns and played 78 games with at least 100 yards rushing. He’s in the discussion among the greatest running backs of all time, if not the greatest.
His speech was also very heartfelt as he had no notes to follow and just went with what came to his mind. His speech touched many hearts and was very emotional. He stated that from right before he began his career, his goal was to become the all-time leading rusher. He did so, passing his hero, the legendary Walter Payton.
Smith will certainly live on amongst all the greats as he now has no more goals to accomplish, at least in football. He’s done it all and now his football journey has come to a triumphant conclusion.
