  1. Nils Olav is an honorary member of the Norwegian King’s Guard, which promoted him from Colonel-in-Chief during a ceremony at the animal attraction.

The Royal Guard adopted “Sir” Nils after a young lieutenant visited the penguins at the zoo in the 1970s.

The guardsmen come to see him every few years while they are in Edinburgh performing at the city’s Military Tattoo.

I actually met some penguins in the wild many years ago when I was stationed in the Falkland islands.

  2. I like penguins. I had a penguin instead of a teddy bear when I was a kid. Not a real one.

  3. We were at the Edinburgh Tattoo last weekend and they didn't have the penguin there then.  Can I ask for my money back?

Apart from the penguin, the Norwegian Guards were probably the stars of the Show - I wanted to bring one of them home, but meany husband wouldn't let me!

  4. Sorry to be pedantic, but Sir Nils Olaf is a King Penguin, not an Emperor.

  5. Quite.

  6. I'm loving Norway, it's about time that somebody promoted us penguin to our true glory. Though, Nils isn't an Emperor Penguin, he's a king.

That's not true!!! Emperor's will always be better than Kings!

  7. Knighting a flightless bird - no wonder they have to give their Spruces away.
