My teacher gave us a few questions and I've been looking for a while but can't find a clear answer can someone help?

They are:

1) What was the other building being built at the time of the empire state building, in a competition to see which would be taller?

2)What made the empire state building taller then the other?

  1. I'm guessing that for number 1 its the sears tower because the twin tower were the tallest building before the fell. I  do know what made it the tallest was probably the needle that is on the top of the building. I hope this helps.

  2. I think your teacher is confused.

A few years before the ESB was constructed there was a competition between the Chrysler Building and 40 Wall St. The owners of 40 Wall St thought they had the competition won until the Chrysler Building people unveiled the spire which made it taller.

When the ESB was built a few years later it had no competition and was the tallest building in NYC for decades until the completion of the World Trade Center in the early 70s.

  3. Bethnyc is correct in that both 40 Wall St and the Chrysler building were competing for "worlds tallest building" title, but what made the Empire State Building taller was the TV broadcast tower at its top.  This was originally designed as a mooring mast for dirigibles, but the combination of a need for a TV tower at that height and the problems associated with moving passengers to and from the dirigible made the antenna a better choice.

The Sears tower is much newer, closer in age to the WTC..

  4. 40 Wall Street and The Chrysler Building.  Not sure what made one taller than the other other than actually being more stories.  Perhaps the PInnacle on Top was what made it taller.
