Question:

Employee Smells At The Work Place, What to do?

have a current situation that I would love to hear suggestions on good ways to handle this. We have all heard of the employee that doesn't practice good hygiene and these are very sensitive conversations. Here is my story.

We have a male employee that works in close proximity to two female employees. I have received several complaints that the male employee smells and his clothes are dirty. I decided to pay him a surprise visit. When I visited the male employee he did not smell and his clothes were good. I then told the female employees that I did not see a problem. I continue to receive complaints and this time even by the manager. I immediately went out to the site and meet with the employee. He did in fact smell and his clothes were a mess. I explained to him that I have been receiving complaints from some of his coworkers on his personal hygiene and asked him if he noticed anything. He said no and that he bathes. What do I DO?

  1. this happened with one of my colleagues at my old job. She was pretty smelly.  We had to take her aside and tell her that a few people had noticed the odour.  She said she cleans her clothes and has a shower every night....we got some air freshener for the office.  What more can you do if they bathe & wash their clothes (dirty clothes is a whole nother story though)?

You should have a personal hygiene & presentation/dress standards policy in your office.  Once that has been issued it is up to the emplyee to abide by the policy...or suffer the consequences.

  2. The manager is complaining about the odor? Wouldnt that be the managers job to make sure this person is clean? Something about this story stinks. Send the person home anytime they stink.

  3. hmmm tough call.... telling him to wear cologne but might not go over well. could just spray oust or febreeze..?

  4. If he bathes, like he said...does he live with a wet dog?  Work part time in a greasy Restaurant?  wear a cheap cologne that doesn't match his skin type? Does he leave his wet clothes in a washer and dry them 2 days later?  Something is making him smell.  Is it a deodorant smell? or a shoe odor?  Does he have a medical condition? Most likely if he doesn't smell himself he's immune to his own odor, maybe he could use a good deodorant type soap.  That's a stinky situation.  The odor may be from his environment, where he lives, how he keeps his house clean etc.  Maybe he doesn't know how to wash clothes properly....maybe you could just ask him some of these questions since he already knows everyone is aware of his personal condition. It could just be his surroundings living with animals or something....good luck!
