I work for a private non-profit in WI. Employee manual says benefits available but we are required to pay in full for life/short-term disability/dental. Is this legal?

  1. Well, they can't force you to buy the insurance. But, there is no requirement for them to pay all or part of the premium. If it is too expansive check prices on insurance from outside sources.

I pay $500 per month ($6,000 per year) for work provided health insurance including dental for my wife and myself, I work for the federal government in the good old USA..

  2. Employee benefits like the ones you mentioned are not mandated by the government, workers compensation insurance is the one that is mandatory.

  3. Yes, the employer isn't required to contribute ANYTHING towards your insurance.  They don't even have to make it available.

Insurance is not mandatory, except for workers compensation.

  4. "Available" - meaning if you want them they're there, but you have to pay for it.  That's how it works.  You don't ever 'have' to take benefits that cost money.
