Hello everyone.

I was wondering if employers in melbourne provide healthcare coverage for its employees? Also, upon acceptance of a job offer, does the company require the candidate to go for a medical checkup? (i.e the usual blood test, chest xray etc)

  1. In Australia we have free public healthcare for all citizens called Medicare.

Some employees, mostly those in high level executive or managerial levels may get private health insurance from their employers though this is not common practise.

Most industry jobs require a medical before commencement of a new job. This does not usually include a blood test or chest xray more just a physical test tesing the ability of manual handling skills. Some industry such as the mines have a extremely thorough medical including blood tests, xrays, psycological reviews, etc.. due to the risk and danger involved in the position.

  2. Health care is not part of the Australian work packages.

Its either Government based ( medicare) or Private Insurance Companies.

With the private stuff you can chose what level of cover you want to pay for or what  you need to cover.

Medicals are not usually part of the job requirement either.

  3. Not usually because health care is generally free or inexpensive. Medicals are not usually required unless for safety requirements or perhaps for a very physical job.

  4. Aus provides universal basic health cover to all citizens and permanent residents, some US based companies provide additional (private cover), where this happens they usually requite a basic health check
