  1. Pass it on straight away otherwise you will be incorrectly taxed on your first payment from your new employer

  2. Not being from ireland I wonder what a P45 is at all?  Here in the states we have W9 that the employer is to have on file for the employees. A P45 is what?

  3. yes you should straight away - you could delay getting your first pay cheque, in addition to paying too much tax...

  4. You should give it to new employer as soon as possible, so that he can calculate first wage deductions correctly. Delays or failure to pass P45 to employer are one of the commonest problems with incorrect tax being deducted from wages. Don't forget to hold on to part 1a, for two reasons. You have documentary evidence if employer should lose rest of form P45, and it is a legal document proving your pay and tax deducted figures from the old employment if you have to fill in any official forms or claim a tax refund.

Wylie Coyote: Greetings to the States from a cold, wet, and windy Devon in England. A form P45 is a form designed to facilitate the financial transfer from one employment to another. The old employer completes the form, showing pay made and tax deducted from the last 6th April, the start of our tax year. When operated correctly, and the form given to new employer, he starts with those figures, and can then operate PAYE on a cumulative basis for the rest of the tax year for the employee.

  5. Hand it in straight away - if its not and you have not been asked to fill in a P46 then you may have to pay Emergency Tax- not good (20p in the £ and you might have to wait a year to get it back!).  Also the payroll have to get it in time to get your tax details correct.

Also ensure that you hand it in to the payroll office if poss.  Managers and supervisors have a habit of losing these things!

  6. You should have to wait because it is still early. You can have it later.
