Employment Form Ask for Social Security Number?

I applied for a job and got the interview. When I went to the reception to ask for xyz person, she gave me this employment form to fill out.

The employment form asked for past work history, my address, etc.

One thing that I don't feel comfortable putting down is my social security number.

Is it neccessary for me to provide my SSN???

It is just an interview and I am not sure if I am going to be hired anyway.

  1. This is one form where a SSN is definitely required. You have no option.

  2. You could write down "Yes".  Just kidding, but actually you could state "will be provided upon offer", and I think H/R would understand.

  3. Legally, you can leave it off it until you're offered the job. However, they may offer you the job subject to passing a security check, and for that they will need the Social Security number.

Just realize that if they're looking for a way to winnow out candidates, it could lose you the job for looking uncooperative or secretive. You could sue, but if the person they hire is as qualified as you, hey.

Once you're hired, you are required to give them the number anyway, so they can withhold taxes, Social Security and Medicare on the money they pay you.

  4. THIS ARE NEW TIMES, ALL THOSE CRIMES ABOUT IDENTITY THEFT, IT'S A RISK EVERY DAY, I RECOMMEND YOU TO WRITE JUST THE LAST 4 NUMBERS OF YOU SSN, IF YOU GET HIRED , YES YOU''L NEED TO PASS A BACKGROUND CHECK, DRUG TESTING AND PAPERWORK FROM UCIS,IRS, AND LOCAL GOV. YOU THEN WILL TO PROVIDE YOUR COMPLETE SSN.
