Emulsion Paint Help!?

So basically, I'm about to begin a craft project that requires the use of emulsion paint (to seal the paper I am using around the object and what not)....but before I go out and buy some, please answer these questions for me~!

1. What is emulsion paint made out of?

2. How harmful is it? (Where can I use it and how?)

3. What is the difference between interior emulsion paint and exterior emulsion paint?

4. If I buy a small tub of it, is it possible for me to reuse the tub for a long time? (Meaning the ability to close the tub tightly after opening it and weeks later, still being able to open it up again and use it once more...)

Emulsion paint is an oil based paint.

It can be made out of many different kinds of oils, everything from mineral oil, to oil distillates, to fish oil. While some oils are toxic, others are neutral.

Furthermore, the pigments uses may or may not be toxic as well. Cadmium, for example, can be very toxic, while soy based pigments are not toxic at all.

The best way to tell if it is toxic or not isn't based on the ingredients but on the label. Because many art supplies are used in design office settings, OSHA requires them to list any toxic ingredients. If there is not data on the label then ask the salesperson for their OSHA data sheet.

Exterior paints are generally a bit more durable, intended to be exposed to weather and sunlight on a regular basis. If you are going to be painting anything that will stay out-doors (like a sign or statue) then you will definitely want exterior paint. Otherwise interior paint will be fine.

And oil based paint does not dry up quickly. It may separate and require re-mixing, though.
