Why do some people have emus as pets?

  1. Well they are gentle, funny, and nearly brainless.  Much more manageable than the more spectacular but more dangerous ostrich, which has been known to kill people.  You can feed an emu out of your hand.  Since they are hardwired to follow the crowd, you can get them to go where you want by having several people walk around them.  

    Every day is brand new for an emu.  Why? because they don't remember what happened yesterday.  

    In case you didn't know, emu feathers are odd, often Y-shaped, since they have no flight or streamlining function.


  2. It may not be that emus are pets, as much as they are a food source.  Emu meat is very low in fat and very rich in protein.  Taste like rich beef.  Pretty good actually.  They also have an oil sac on their back that is used for lotions and creams.  The feathers are also used for making dusters.  

    Some people just like exotic animals and keep them for the novelty of it.  I have raised emus, but I wouldn't call them pets.
