End of India’s supremacy may harm Test cricket, feels http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Geoffrey-Boycott-c58776 – Cricket News Update
While the rising popularity of the Twenty20 format of the game is widely being considered as a possible threat for Test cricket, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013’s former captain, Geoffrey Boycott, has taken the debate to the
next level, saying that http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750’s recent loss in Test competition against England may harm longer version of the game.
Boycott’s comments came after the Englishmen became the undisputed Kings of the Test cricket by thumping India in the first three Tests of the ongoing crucial clash between the top two sides of the world.
The former skipper showed great delight over England sealing the No. 1 position, but at the same time, he expressed serious concerns over the imminent future of Test cricket.
Boycott feels that India’s dismal show in ongoing contest may decrease their fans’ interest in longest format of the game and if it happens, that would be very dangerous for the growth of five-day cricket
since India is the paymaster of the game.
“Every time their board auctions a TV rights package, at least five broadcasters bid. And those broadcasters provide vital funding for other countries when India tour abroad. So if India sneezes, the whole
world catches a cold," Boycott wrote in his recent article.
Referring to the conditions in Pakistan where no side is ready to visit because of security issues, the former English captain described that the increasing fame of Twenty20 format plus the political turmoil
in different countries might cut down the attractiveness of Test cricket.
"Nobody will tour http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sri-Lanka-c758. The result is a two-tier
Test structure. Economics dictate which four countries rank in the top division," added the 70-year-old former batsman who served England in 108 Tests.
Another cause of concern for Boycott is the involvement of money factor in the sport. He explained that since the Twenty20 leagues such as IPL and Big Bash, have become so lucrative, the youngsters are
focussing more on making money rather than concentrating on the true form of cricket.
