End of road for Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying at the 2011 World Championships
Malaysia’s Chan Peng Soon and Goh Liu Ying failed to reach into the Mixed Doubles quarter-final as Singapore’s Chayut Triyachart and Yao Lei ended the Malaysian’s journey in the round-of-16 match of the 2011 World Championships, at Wembley Arena in London,
England, on Thursday, August 11.
The Malaysian couple, who is currently having a world ranking of 17 in the Mixed Doubles category, played better badminton in the starting set but failed to finish it at the end as their opponents delivered well and won it. The second game was easy for the
Singaporeans and they wasted no chance and won it easily.
Chan Peng and Goh Liu opened their campaign in a spirited manner and remained ahead of their rivals in the opening set until the score reached at 19-16. At this stage, the Malaysian duo lost their focus which cost them the opening game with the score of
19-21.
In the second set, they could not find the flow throughout the game against the confident Singaporeans, who were playing perfect badminton. Chan Peng and Goh Liu failed to use their strategy effectively and made several unforced errors.
The Malaysians lost the second game with the margin of 14-21, as they were not playing well against the Singapore pair. Chan Peng and Goh Liu lost the match in straight-sets with the score of 19-21 and 14-21.
This was the third time for the Malaysian duo that they failed to reach in the quarter-finals of the World Championships. After losing the match, a disappointed Goh Liu said, “They played well to open up the game and we could not handle their persistent
attacks. We certainly did not get it right in our combination today.”
However, Goh Liu is determined and confident to get good results with her partner, Peng Soon, in the upcoming events to qualify for the 2012 London Olympic Games. She said, “It is just unfortunate that Peng Soon and I lacked training time together coming
into this tournament. We did not train for a month because of Peng Soon’s back injury.”
Now, Peng Soon has recovered from injury and the duo is looking forward to qualify for next year’s Olympic Games.
